TYD#804.
- 1980.
My brother was contacted by Mr. M, the owner of the 90ft. Mc Lear & Harris, Palmer Johnson
built Brigantine CENTURION. The object of the conversation was to replace the boat, which has
serious faults, because of a lack of stability. The culprit was an overbuilt, over-rigged vessel. The new
boat is to be built with wood and epoxy, not following the more traditional planking construction of
Tironderoga and Varua, the two boats influencing this design, Big Ti by L. Francis Herreshoff, and
Varua, with Lines Plan by Starling Burgess.
NOTE:

- From paper. Newport this week.
- So well, Big Ti cannot be duplicated. Yes, sisterships have been built with more or less success, in
ferro-cement and steel.
- Varuna is closer, originally built by and for William E. Robinson, in his busy wartime shipyard and
launched in 1942. For a good read: More Good Boats by Roger C. Taylor.
- I spent some time at the Lee Boat Building shop in Maine, the Builder of White Hawk, a Bruce King design, to discuss the method of construction before designing Iaorana.
